Menopause

Introduction

Besides psychological changes associated with the menopause there are also hormonal changes which may manifest themselves in a physical way and can lead to perplexing symptoms. The most notable of these are the "hot flushes" caused by the rush of hormones into the bloodstream as the gland system re-adjusts itself. A combination of psychological changes often leads to neurosis and depression signified by rapid mood swings, irritability along with water retention and a tendency towards weight gain.

Dietary Factors

Oats in any form are recommended daily along with supplements of evening primrose oil, calcium and vitamins B, D and E. Fennel tea boosts oestrogen levels and regulates hormonal change. Trials currently being undertaken are proving that ginseng root is of great benefit. Sage tea also appears to be beneficial.

Other Factors

Gentle exercise such as swimming, walking and most importantly yoga alongside spiritual nourishment (e.g. meditation or prayer) are of great significance and benefit.

Oils and Massage

Fennel, Geranium, Bergamot, Camomile, Lavender, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang, Grapefruit, Rose, Jasmine and Neroli are the most relevant essential oils. Ideally a base combining sunflower oil, evening primrose oil, borage oil and pure vitamin E oil should be of great assistance due to the high Gamma Linoleic Acid (G.L.A.) content which helps the body redress the imbalnce.
